Research Operations and Opportunities Amid COVID-19 Subscribe: http://go.arizona.edu/yt-subscribe University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins and Dr. Elizabeth “Betsy” Cantwell, SVP for Research and Innovation, discuss how while no one knows when a world pandemic will occur, the investments we have made in our research infrastructure, many through TRIF funding, are proving to be critical to addressing the needs of our community and beyond. Since before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Research, Innovation and Impact team has been working on key projects that has allowed us to help with community response initiatives, from innovative ventilator designs and to 3D-printing medical masks to creating collection kits and facilitating donations of personal protective equipment (PPE). The team is also sharing guidance from experts on how the virus is affecting our community and how we are meeting the challenges of such a disruptive event with resilience and ingenuity. And we are approaching COVID-19 from many angles – therapeutics, virology, diagnostics, epidemiology, psychology, linguistics, behavioral sciences, economics, and more. While we’ve all had to pivot, Dr. Cantwell shares that research operations at Arizona put plans in place right away to ensure safety of students, staff and faculty and the continuation of discovery while we’re all working remotely. And we’ve already seen opportunities to improve how we work moving forward after the risks of this pandemic are behind us. The University of Arizona existed before Arizona was a state. Our first graduating class in 1895 consisted of two women and one male. Since then, we've learned that we're better together. We do more when we work across backgrounds, skills and perspectives. That's how we've become long-time partners with NASA, leaders in both the arts and sciences, and able to prepare students to succeed in a world where most of the jobs today's kindergartners will have don't even exist yet. We know how to converge. #universityofarizona #uarizona #covid19
