Sketch 12 - Kingdom

Memories were somewhat of a foreign concept to her. To willingly keep knowledge of past events, to be able to remember whatever one would deem important, she couldn’t imagine it. Couldn’t understand it. That’s not to say she didn’t have them. Of course she did, but they weren’t hers. She didn’t choose them. They were just the memories she was allowed. After all, who’d choose to remember the weight of any weapon in their hand, the overwhelming stench of decay and death, or the many, many ways to twist and break a person’s body before they died. If she had the luxury of choice, she’d want to remember the feel of the sun against her face, the soft grass against her skin. The wind’s melody lulling her eyes shut and drifting her away into a dreamless sleep. But that’s not what’s needed, not for her. Not for what they all need her to be. Countless times, thousands would have been dead had she not have been there. Her people, her kingdom would’ve been exiled from history forever, never to gain so much as a footnote in the history books. Because of her, the kingdom was spared from forgottence. Even now, with the kingdom rising higher and the years passing faster and faster, they still need her protection. Their modern technology may have made any normal blade void, but not even their fastest bullet will slow any Netherbeast. The sword she carries will always be more effective in dispelling any threat from the Nethers. As if the devil himself heard her, the wind stills around her. So she stands, hands itching for her sword’s familiar weight in her hand. Ahead of her, her blood runs cold, and she can hear the faint roars of the Nether opening once more. Behind her, the outskirts of her kingdom brightens, and two people and their animal exit, running toward her carrying her sharpened blade. They rush towards her, eager to wish her luck. She can’t remember their names or faces, but maybe she knew them. They seemed to know her, to be sidetracked and soon jumping from one topic to the next a mile a minute leaving no room for any response besides from the occasional nod. The Netherbeasts are wailing now, screams of the hellbound dead now reaching her ears. And not just hers. The two in front of her pale, and the animal with them starts to back away. They’re handing her a sword, and waving goodbye. Already, she forgets they were even there. Everything she remembers, it must relate to the safety of her kingdom. Anything about it, from the people at its founding to the exact color of all 1200 grand palace’s tiles, she knows. Memories of details almost too trivial to matter, they are the difference between a stable stone to walk on and a trap door waiting to be opened to reveal Netherbeasts starving for despair. That is why she was here, why she of all people was chosen to live and survive. It was foolish to think or wish otherwise. The Royal Family had chosen her, had given her the gift of precious few memories, even if she fails to understand them. So, their lives, their protection is the highest priority. To repay their kindness, she fights. Once more, she readies her blade, and falls into the remembered rhythm of battle. Everything for her survival, her survival for the kingdom.
