Kwek Kwek Recipe Kwek kwek is a popular filipino street food here in the philippines. It is sold along the street together with fish balls, tokneneng, kikiam, fried tofu, calamares. It is made by deep frying boiled quail egg(itlog ng pugo) in an orange coloured flour batter. It's another popular variation is tokneneng. The only difference is tokneneng use larger chicken or duck eggs(penoy at itlog ng bibe). While kwek kwek use smaller eggs like quail eggs. They even use balut(is a developing egg embryo)usually a duck or a chicken for tokneneng since its a cheaper alternative. Annato powder is mostly use as a coloring agent in making kwek-kwek and tokneneng. It's responsible for its deep orange colored batter. Annatto powder also gives the batter a hint of flavor. But if you don't have annatto powder, you can use orange food color instead. Kwek kwek is commonly sold along the streets. And nowadays you can see it being sold around the neighborhood. Kwek kwek is usually served with a spiced vinegar-based dip. Kwek kwek is so popular maybe because it served as a quick street snack and its also affordable beside being delicious. If you decided to make kwek kwek or toknenengg in your own home. Don't worry, it's easy to cook and the ingredients are just around your kitchen. Kwek-kwek is best enjoyed when it is still somewhat hot, the batter is more crispier when eaten. It can start to become soggy once it cools. So better eat while still crispy. Enjoy!
