The real hero of "The Sound of Music" is the Baroness, not Maria. Set in Austria in the 1930s, "The Sound of Music" is about Baroness Schraeder (played by Eleanor Parker), an elegant, sophisticated socialite who seems a perfect match for Captain Von Trapp (played by Christopher Plummer), a widower with seven children. The man initially recognizes the Baroness as his "savior" who "brought some meaning back into my life." Alas, the man soon falls in love with his children's nanny (played by Julie Andrews)—a yodeler and failed nun who got fired by her church. Despite Baroness Schraeder's best efforts to rescue the relationship and build rapport with the man's seven children, she eventually faces defeat, and therefore decides to break off the engagement in a classy manner. The man quickly marries the nanny, but his life soon falls apart: Austria gets annexed by Germany, the man's eldest daughter discovers that her boyfriend is a Nazi, and the family is forced to abandon their mansion and flee the country by foot over the mountains. Moral of the story: It's important to be careful about who we marry!
