Simple how-to: Change Ford CD4E auto trans fluid (Mondeo, Contour, Escape, Tribute etc)

Easy DIY how to: service the CD4E automatic transmission in your Ford, Mercury, or Mazda by replacing its ATF. This is my preferred technique for changing the fluid, assuming an external oil cooler is present. Using this procedure a good 8+ liters (quarts) may be flushed out of the gearbox and replaced with new oil. Other methods either replace only a small portion of the total oil, e.g. the 3 or 4 liters from the sump drain, or require multiple and repeat drain/fills which is wasteful of costly new fluid. Nb: there is no user serviceable oil filter in the CD4E. The filter is buried internally and is only replaced during a rebuild.
