Attention! This footage is undated and missing most of the useful context of its original purpose and what precisely it covers. The file which we received as a donation for research purposes is earliest traced to a series of tape collections made by the now-deceased Don Birley, a former acrobatics coach and founder of the AcroWales troupe in the UK, which itself was active as early as the 1970s. The clip itself bears the title: "0088 DB 2 3 Simmonds Acrobatic Troup Practice" Any information on the clip in this state, as well as the subjects and specific recordings would be greatly appreciated (see our contact info at the bottom of the description) The following info comes from an article from the New Zealand Herald, which will be linked below. The troupe itself was formed by Charlie Simmonds in 1931, and following his death in 1962, his daughter Mavis Simmonds took over leadership. It was during her time as leader that human towers and advanced flexibility took over as mainstays of the troupe, along with a greater emphasis towards young girls as performers (This is likely due to the ease and norm of training flexibility in that demographic, but also likely due to Mavis' own youth spent as an acrobat informing how she would cast the troupe, prioritizing light weights and small statures). Former members of the troupe described Mavis as being driven and extreme in her approach to getting taller formation, increasingly flexible stunts and tighter choreography, yet not unfair or mean in her approach. The group was active in Napier, New Zealand, which itself lies in the territory of Hawke's Bay. The girls of Simmonds Acrobatic Troupe typically performed in local venues and on weekends to accommodate for school and domestic schedules. Please enjoy this compilation. Some of the levels of flexibility and balance achieved by the girls of this troupe are just mind-blowing. In the future, we hope to uncover more about the unique world of Oceanic contortion and acrobatics for you. ------------------------------------------------------------- (As usual, The Blink Age owns NONE of the material presented, and presents it only for historical and educational purposes.)
