http://www.guruparents.com - the Japanese abacus or soroban The soroban is a Japanese abacus. It is a simple, yet hugely powerful mathematical tool which can be a great way for parents and teachers to get kids excited about math. The beads make a neat clicking sound as they move and the simple elegance of the soroban can be captivating. It can be beneficial in helping young kids learn to count and perform the basic mathematical functions of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Some of its advantages are: - It has place value - columns increase by a factor of ten in size. The more exposure young children get to this concept the better. - Moving the beads can help very young children with one-to-one correspondence - a key skill in accurate counting - Performing addition and subtraction on the soroban aids in developing a familiarity with key number relationships - for example 7 is the same as 10 - 3 - It is quite unusual - at least in the western world. A child who does become even just a little proficient on the soroban will have a skill that seems almost magical to adults. The praise they receive for being able to do sums on it will enhance their mathematical confidence - Above all it is fun! The soroban is simple, powerful and elegant and the beads click and clack nicely into place. Mathematics should always be taught in a fun, non-threatening manner and the abacus is a great tool in helping to do this For more information on the abacus head to http://www.guruparents.com/abacus.html
