Learn about heartburn. There is a difference between heartburn and heart pain. Heartburn is a term used to describe when acid, or contents of the stomach, come into the esophagus, or throat, and cause an irritation or discomfort. The digestive system starts when we first put food into our mouth. As the food is being chewed and broken down, it takes its trip down the stomach through the esophagus. The esophagus is a pipe which opens and closes known as contractions to push down into the stomach. When it's in the stomach, the food is digested in a low pH (acidic) environment. Heartburn is caused when the acid travels up the esophagus. Heartburn is caused with a few things. It can do with how we eat, sleep, or how we feel. But it's all related to a part called the sphincter. A sphincter is a door that should only allow one way passage. The lower esophageal sphincter opens and closes to let food in and it should remain closed to keep food in the stomach. Over time as we age, our diaphragm can get loose and the sphincter can open which allows food to seep up. Fatty heavy foods or our emotional state can affect how the sphincter can remain closed to keep food in. The esophagus is made to transport, not digest, food. So any acid that gets in the esophagus doesn't do well. It irritates the esophagus which is painful. It's a burning sensation. Because the esophagus is in the center of the chest, which is close to our hearts, it feels like our heart is burning. The medical term for this is gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD). Heartburn symptoms can come in different varieties. It can include sore throats, sinus congestions, hoarse throat, or a cough. Diet can be a contributing factor in heartburn. Everybody is different but certain foods can cause heartburn. Spicy food, bagels, tomato products, betaine in vitamins, or highly fatty foods are examples of food that can cause heartburn. 0:00 Introduction - What's up with heartburn? 1:27 The digestive system 2:23 When do you experience heartburn? 6:10 What does acid in the esophagus do or not do? 7:49 Heartburn symptoms 8:23 How diet affects heartburn Remember to subscribe to learn more! /coachmdofficial SUPPORT COACHMD ON PATREON https://www.patreon.com/CoachMD CoachMD's goal is to help you create a great life with a strong mind, a healthy body, and an unshakeable spirit.
