Have observers placed facing the correct ways. Make sure you fix the observers from the tutorial video as there are 2 extras. Make sure golem is protected from rain/mobs. Make sure to turn off before unloading the farm. When in doubt check the world dl as it works fine there. SMPs are probably modded and could affect vanilla features.
