The Opening ceremony of the Kazungula Million dollar bridge project. Kazungula weigh station. Kazungula Bridge is a road and rail bridge over the Zambezi river between the countries of Zambia and Botswana at Kazungula. The bridge was opened for traffic on 10 May 2021. In August 2007 the governments of Zambia and Botswana announced a deal to construct a bridge to replace the existing ferry. Zambia and Botswana funded the $259m infrastructure project. The plan was to unplug the Zambezi River barrier and link the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania and Zambia to South Africa and Namibia via Botswana The Kazungula Bridge is central to the corridor as it will ease high volumes of traffic in the region, facilitate trade, spur economic growth in the area and beyond, and help prepare the SADC region for the predicted population growth of 72 million people by 2027. The Kazungula Bridge project is a multi-national project in the North-South Corridor and is part of an infrastructure improvement programme that covers the whole corridor. The 923m road and rail bridge will link Botswana and Zambia over the Zambezi River to replace the existing ferry, and a one-stop border facility at Kazungula. In November, Daewoo Engineering and Construction was selected to be the contractor of the project and construction of the brigde started after the ground-breaking ceremony was held on the Botswana side of the Kazungula border. The ground-breaking ceremony was led by Vice President Guy Scott and his Botswana counterpart, Ponatshego Kedikilwe.
