India / New Delhi / Delhi’s oldest classical music school This was Pandit Vinay Chandra Maudgalya’s residence, where he established his music school, Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, in 1939. The school not only became synonymous with music education in India but also put Delhi on the cultural map with a slew of concerts by some of the greatest artistes — Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Pandit DV Paluskar and N Rajam among others.It gave the city an opportunity to revel in the glory and aesthetics of the classical arts and concert culture.Talking about music performances in the old days, his son, Madhup Mudgal, says, “The shamiyana used to come up in the verandah and the equipment would be set up. Despite the hustle and bustle, I would notice the care given to every little detail. It was not just about learning music. It was so much more.
