I remember Anu Menon for her previous movie, Waiting. This new movie is a biopic based on the life of a famous Indian mental calculator and writer, Shakuntala Devi. The story unveils through the eyes of her daughter, Anupama Banerjee. Vidya Balan appears as Shakuntala Devi and Sanya Malhotra as Anupama Banerjee. In the opening scene you see Anupama in London, all set to file a criminal case against her mother. What makes her do that? Leaving this question unanswered, you are taken to a flashback. You see baby Shakuntala as a child prodigy who shows extraordinary skills in Mathematics. She was able to solve very difficult problems in no time. Her father makes use of her skills to earn money by conducting shows in various schools and public places. Years later, she moved to London, taking her shows to the next level. Her talent leaves Europeans spellbound. Very soon, she gains fame and money. She travels to different parts of the world and wins a lot of recognition. As she proved to operate faster than computers, she received the title ‘human computer’. In the meanwhile, she meets a Bengali guy, Paritosh Banerjee. She goes to Kolkata with him, gets married, and Anupama is born. With the support of her husband, she goes back to London to resume her shows. She travels to more cities and even finds a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. While she was reaping success on one side, her family life was falling apart. Shakuntala Devi, the movie, is more an emotional drama showing the relationship between a mother and her daughter. Shakuntala Devi was a daring personality. Like any mother, she was not perfect. But she tried to be a normal mother to the best of her ability. Vidya Balan, as always, has done justice to her character. Portraying real life characters and events is definitely challenging. I felt the script a little hazy that kept jumping between the past and the present. As prominence went to the mother-daughter relationship part, some areas in Devi’s life, including her publishing a book on homosexuality, were merely touched upon.
