Republican US Senator from Alabama Tommy Tuberville has put a promotions blockade on two members of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff. The move has raised concerns at the US Pentagon about military readiness in the Middle East. Pentagon says the move has already stalled more than 260 nominations of senior officers and could balloon to 650 by the end of the year. The blockade is affecting the promotion of two military officers who are supposed to monitor the escalating situation in the Persian Gulf. The US forces are on high alert in the Persian Gulf amid threats from Tehran over seizing merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Washington is sending warships, fighter jets and even considering stationing armed troops aboard civilian vessels to protect mariners. The US is readying teams of armed sailors and Marines to embark on commercial ships, a US official told Politico. Since May, the Pentagon has also deployed its advanced stealth fighter jet F-35 to the area to protect shipping. Tensions have escalated in response to a rise this year in Tehran’s attempts to seize commercial vessels. Is domestic politics holding up Biden's military strategy in Middle East?
