Similar to the human heart, a hydraulic system also has a heart that plays a unique role and powers the whole system. It is the pump. A pump is used in a hydraulic system to convert mechanical power into hydraulic energy. The main purpose of a pump is to produce the flow by taking the oil from the tank and delivering it to the rest of the system. When the hydraulic system resists the flow developed by the pump, the pressure is developed in the system. After the hydraulic fluid or oil is drawn into the pump, it is pushed into the hydraulic system thus creating a flow of oil and transferring power to the system. In the fluid power industry, pumps are classified into two broad categories of Non-positive and positive displacement pumps. Non-positive displacement pumps also called hydrodynamic pumps, use the motion of the flowing fluid to maintain the pressure in the system. Positive displacement pumps are also called hydrostatic pumps and are extensively used in the fluid power industry.
