This is the first of three lectures I recorded in order to introduce my foundation students to Nietzsche's moral theory. The course is entitled Introduction to Philosophy for University Students at the University of Kent. A recording at the end of the term, I know that I had to ground his though in examples. So, having given perhaps more of a personal introduction than I might often, if only because I find Nietzsche's work particularly inspirational, I introduce some biographical work before outlining his general criticism of hitherto moral philosophies. I highlight the ideas of care and pity as two that Nietzsche might problematise (as belonging to what he called the 'slave morality'), relating them to students' likely experiences.
