Homo bodoensis: a new human ancestor | US News | NewsRme Scientists from the University of Winnipeg and across the world have identified and named an ancient progenitor to contemporary humans, according to paleoanthropologists Dr. Mirjana Roksandic and her colleagues. Homo bodoensis, the earliest known human progenitor, existed in Africa during the Middle Pleistocene, roughly 500,000 years ago. Modern humans may trace their ancestry back to Homo bodoensis, a species that lived at the same time as modern humans, also known as Homo sapiens. However, paleoanthropologists refer to this period as "the muddle in the middle" because of the lack of knowledge about human evolution during this time period. Human evolution's last puzzle piece has been found, and it sheds light on a hitherto obscure period of human history. Researchers named the species after reassessing Middle Pleistocene fossils from Africa and Eurasia. Homo heidelbergensis and Homo rhodesiensis were the most common names given to the fossils. The difficulty for scientists was that these two groups had different and sometimes conflicting meanings. H. heidelbergensis remains recovered in Europe were really early Neanderthals, according to DNA data. Known as Bodoensis, the species is thought to have descended from modern humans and was named after a skull unearthed in Ethiopia's Bodo D'ar region. Most of the Middle Pleistocene people found in Africa and those found in Southeast Europe will be referred to as Homo bodoensis under the new name. A large percentage of those found in Southeast Europe are likely to be Neanderthals. The experts say renaming is tough and only done under certain situations. Despite this, they are confident in the new term Homo bodoensis, with the condition that it must be used by other researchers going forward.
