Professor martin Cormican is nominated as Galway Science Person of the Year 2020 for services to STEM education; public health; ground-breaking research on antibiotic-resistant ‘superbugs’; and in helping lead Ireland’s national response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Professor Cormican graduated from NUI Galway Medical School in 1986. He trained in Ireland, the UK and the USA, and in 1999 was appointed Professor of Bacteriology at NUI Galway and Consultant Microbiologist. Professor Cormican’s career has focused on public health, infection control and antibiotic resistance. He was appointed National Clinical Lead for healthcare-associated infection and antimicrobial resistance to support the urgent response to the epidemic spread of, in particular, carbapenamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae – a type of ‘superbugs’. He is director of the GUH National Microbiology Reference Laboratory services. His research interests include antibiotic resistance and food-borne infection. With colleagues, he established the Centre for One Health at NUI Galway to promote research and advocacy on the central role of the environment in enabling people to live healthy, fulfilling and joyful lives. In 2020, Martin has provided essential clinical leadership in responding to the novel coronavirus epidemic in his role as the clinical lead for infection control. He has contributed widely on public media to inform on the pandemic, and he has helped his colleagues at all levels in the HSE, across the country, navigate the pandemic. Martin is an exemplary local STEM figure making an indelible national, and international, impact. In so doing, he continues to provide expert leadership; both inform and assure the public; and provide inspiration to the next generation of STEM leaders from Galway.
