Gritty win by a score of 8-2, earned by blood, sweat, and fucking tears! BJJ is the only sport when you can each try to break each other’s ankles and then hug it out after. What a crazy match that was … when I wrestled in my freshman year of high school, I went 0-13 by getting pinned every single time with 12 of those being in the first period. A lot of other kids were getting their first wins, but I sort of felt left out because I wasn’t catching up to them. When I was 20 years old, I also got pinned by a 12 year old who was less than half my size at an outdoors graduation party. However, those experiences ultimately served to make me a more driven person in life, sign up for BJJ, and then eventually get that first W at Marple Sports Arena. Now I know what the other side feels like, how the other half lives :) I want to thank everyone at Balance Studios for having made this possible, especially Coach Jay for having all the patience in the world and believing in me this whole time in personal training under LMTLSS. We drilled the underhook sweep from half guard a million times on Monday with emphasis on the underhook being static and moving downwards, not to the side and that’s what ultimately gave me his back when my brain was in lizard mode. Phil Migliarese’s Tuesday lesson on guard retention helped me retain the 8-2 lead when I was trying to stall under pressure in the last two minutes.
