Today I'm going over studies to tell you about an easy tweak you can make to prevent negative health consequences from supplementing vitamin D, and make it actually work. I'm not talking about basic stuff like dosing, or D2 vs D3, or taking it with fat sources--I'm talking about something I bet you've never heard of before. @MichePhDمنذ 2 سنوات ----- VITAMIN D DOSING + VITAMIN K INFORMATION -----
    ---- Vitamin K: ----
The idea that you need to take vitamin K2 with vitamin D is not id="hidden2" class="buttons"> scientifically well supported. The evidence is indirect at best, so really people are just guessing at this point. There does not seem to be any evidence--even indirect--that it's needed for absorption of vitamin D.
You aren't going to get calcification from taking vitamin D unless you're megadosing vitamin D. Vitamin K2 won't fix the negative effects of megadosing.
The need for magnesium with D has much more direct, scientific evidence behind it.

    ---- Dosing: ----
Since I'm getting a lot of questions surrounding physicians (doctors) on Youtube recommending vitamin D megadosing, here's some info on that. I don't watch those videos myself so I don't know what they're basing their recommendations off of, I'm just going to talk about my perspective/evidence I've seen.
I mention in the video that people should decide for themselves what D dose they want (and talk to their doctor about dosing), but I threw up the standard recommendation just in case anyone was curious. Ultimately there's no one size fits all dose because it depends on current D levels, and since the video focus is not on D dosing, I didn't get into that whole debate. But here is some information for those of you who are curious. Note that (responsible) doctors recommending huge doses of vitamin D would only do so for people who are actually deficient.
    From peer-reviewed articles:
"Potential chronic toxicity would result from administration of doses above 4,000 IU/day for extended periods"
It is a known problem that doctors over-prescribe vitamin D: "Physicians treat patients with high doses of vitamin D for various disorders and in some instances, prescribe doses that exceed the suggested recommendations."
"patients should be advised of current dosing recommendations, in particular that 2000 IU/day should not be exceeded in the long term"

"Confusion, apathy, recurrent vomiting, abdominal pain, polyuria, polydipsia, and dehydration are the most often noted clinical symptoms of vitamin D toxicity"
"The IOM cited several association studies that suggest possible deleterious effects of serum 25(OH)D [vitamin D] concentrations above 50 ng/ml. Those effects include all-cause mortality, an incidence of certain cancers (breast, pancreatic, and prostate), and falls and fractures. "

@charlieparkerisمنذ 2 سنوات This is the first time I found any YouTuber or blogger talk about this, it's something I discovered myself in 2015. I was staying in The Philippines id="hidden3" class="buttons"> at the time, I had been living in a budget hotel that had no windows, and after a month, I started thinking I was probably low in vitamin D, not just from being windowless for a month, but because of the tropical heat, I had been avoiding daylight sun for way longer than a month.
Anyway, I went to the store and bought vitamin D, and in very short order, maybe within a week or two, I became constipated and had terrible anxiety. I didn't think much about the constipation initially, but I was very concerned about the anxiety, as suddenly I was really anxious doing ordinary things like just going out of my hotel.
The only thing I had changed was taking vitamin D, so I started searching online about vitamin D and anxiety, and eventually I found some info talking about how supplemental vitamin D depletes magnesium stores, so then I looked up the symptoms of low magnesium, and among them, anxiety and constipation. Bingo!
I go to the store and buy magnesium citrate, I take 400mg as soon as I walk out of the store, and within 30 minutes I feel the anxiety start to dissipate. My bowel movements also returned to normal over the next few days.
And this is where another amazing thing happened, over the next weeks and months, my chronic cystic body acne slowly cleared. And eventually I had an acne free body for the first time in my adult life.
It wasn't until 2022 that I knew the central role magnesium played in that. You see soon after starting the magnesium, I also started vitamin A, and I assumed vitamin A was the main player in the acne clearing. I think it was partly, but in concert with magnesium and vitamin D.
When covid started, I added some things to my vitamin regimen, including zinc.
Soon, my body acne started coming back, for 2 years I took zinc daily, and my body acne got so bad I was bleeding all over my sheets every night. But everywhere you read online says that zinc improves acne, so I didn't suspect it.
Then I was lazy to refill some supplements, including zinc and magnesium, and the acne severity lessened greatly. So I started to suspect the zinc = acne link. I remembered other times in the previous 15 years when my body acne got so bad it bled, and remembered it may have aligned with taking zinc. So I cross-referenced my purchase history on iherb and found that I always purchased zinc prior to the breakouts occurring. Now I knew, for me, supplemental zinc = body acne.
So I continued vitamin A, and the body acne got much better, but never fully stopped occurring, it was no longer angry and bleeding, but it didn't stop.
Then I ordered magnesium again, and soon after taking it, the acne stopped. And now, some months into continuing magnesium, vitamin A and vitamin D, my body is completely clear again.
For 2 years I harmed myself daily by taking zinc, and didn't realize another awesome effect magnesium has on me is clearing acne.
I didn't mean to write such an essay nobody has time to read. but there you have it.

@jamescallahan7624منذ 2 سنوات Psychiatrist here! I’ve been recommending magnesium Glycinate + D3 vitamin + zinc complex + omega complex 3/6/9 and DHA way before this topic became popularized by our social media. It helps that I received 2 additional years in functional medicine training. In fact, when I first started practicing, I received calls from many other medical colleagues questioning my style of medical practice. I am extremely grateful that finally more physicians are recommending better nutrition or supplementations of the above, aside of synthetic Rx.
I found that many of my patients fully recovered and/or showed significant improvement with supplements alone.
Many of my patients not only come for mental health treatment, but frequently we end up addressing other related health conditions secondary to nutritional deficiencies.

I convinced my nurse practitioner to prescribe vitamin D and the bone pain was subsiding, I lost 15lb id="hidden7" class="buttons"> in three months. She went on and on about the potential for developing hypercalcemia if I kept taking the D and told me NOt to take magnesium as this could cause hypercalcemia (my labs showed my calcium level in mid range normal) I have promptly gained back the weight and all of my other symptoms came back. @TheCatWitch63منذ 2 سنوات I spent almost 20 months with horrible pains and muscle weakness. Even breathing hurt under my ribs. I couldn’t turn over in bed or sit up and was even losing function in my right leg and hand. I saw four different doctors who gave four different diagnosis, from muscular atrophy due to the pandemic, to fibromyalgia to spondylitis or any other form of autoimmune arthritis. I finally got to see an endocrinologist. It turned out that my Vitamin D level was at 3, and that was after six weeks of taking 50K UI at once every week. Now I’m taking 100K IU in single doses every week plus magnesium, zinc and potassium. My pain is almost gone and I have almost fully recovered the use of my leg. K2 is needed to help ensure the improved calcium absorbed due to taking D3 is moved into our bones and not otherwise lodging in our arteries causing their calcification.

@scottsagerdahl5197منذ 2 سنوات I was under the impression that the angle of the sun hitting the earth affects the UVB ray and Vit. D. I live in Central California and according to the id="hidden44" class="buttons"> sun azimuth scale we can only absorb Vit. D between March 20th or so and September 20th. You also have to look at the time of day, there is a window of time when you can absorb that is largest around the summer soltice and gets smaller as time progresses. It not just a mater of going outside and letting the sun hit you. ....وسعت 9

@johnkeepin7527منذ 2 سنوات Thanks for your advice about the need to cross balance the amount of Vitamin D supplement with other contents in one’s diet, in particular the Magnesium level. It may be that the company that supplies your water will issue chemical analysis reports from time to time. The one that I use (Thames Water) does that for various local areas. Where I live the mean value is 5.85 mg/l. Not a lot compared with other items in my diet, but it’s a useful extra. I think I normally take in about 300 mg/day in total. ....وسعت 6

@aprildomer422منذ 2 سنوات WOW! All of this interaction in the comments is WONDERFUL! It’s almost as good as sitting around the dinner table chatting with friends
I wantd="hidden54" class="buttons">ed to add my 2¢ by saying that it’s best to add magnesium supplements to your diet SLOWLY. For example, start with a low dose, like 250 mg, for 4-5 days. Most people are ok starting with a low dose, but sometimes people get diarrhea, so it’s a good idea to take your magnesium before bed. That way, if you’re going to get the ‘rhea, it’ll be in the morning, before you leave the house. If you tolerate the 250 mg well, try bumping up to 500. Again, there’s a chance that it might cause diarrhea, but don’t give up! If you have the option of giving it a few days, you’ll probably tolerate it well. If after a week (by “week”, I mean 4-5 days) you’re still having diarrhea, buy some 400 mg capsules & try taking those for a week. If all is well, try the 500 mg again. You get the picture, right? You may have to play with the dose, slowly increasing it, but it is WELL WORTH the trouble!! I take 650mg daily & there is a significant improvement in how I feel & function!( I’m 65, fibromyalgia x16 years, multiple major abdominal surgeries) PLUS. as an added bonus, the magnesium AND potassium combo ( plus exercise) has taken my previously high blood pressure down to a normal range & I don’t have to take “ blood pressure medicine”. That’s been one of the most significant bonuses for me! I also take Vit D3. And even tho my diet is usually pretty clean & healthy, it’s not always consistent and I don’t eat much meat, so I need to supplement with other vitamins & minerals, especially Vit B complex & a really good Vit B12 ( methylcobalamin is SIGNIFICANTLY better utilized by the body than the more prevalent cyanocobalamin used in most OTC supplements) After years & years of exploring & experimenting with supplements, I’ve found that “Nature Made” vitamins are a VERY good value for money. ( and no, I have no affiliation with them) Some supps are just worth spending the extra money on ( like B12) & so I also buy stuff from Thorne. ( both can be found on Amazon) Check out Thorne labs, they are really impressive! Great
    informative & educational website!
And this channel with Miche is PHENOMENAL!! I am SO grateful to her for doing all of the research & then sharing the information with us! This really, truly is a labor of love! I’m a retired RN & one of the main focuses in my career was( & still is!) to teach people how the body actually works & why what we do to our bodies ( what we eat, think, do or don’t do) REALLY DOES MATTER!! And Miche is presenting us with the magic of how beautifully everything works in unison to create this miraculous thing we call our bodies. ( and the tools to keep it all working properly!) And if you think about it, it really IS magic!! THANK YOU Miche!

@beabeliever9قبل 4 أشهر So how do we test for magnesium? Does it flutuate alot? Is it wayer soluable and leave your body quickly like vitamin C?
  • @
@boydmccollum692منذ 2 سنوات Thanks for the info - this is one of the things that's very frustrating about the health industry (including medicine, nutrition, etc.). The majority id="hidden59" class="buttons"> of the time they speak so authoritatively on health, yet something as simple as testing for magnesium levels is beyond them (just eat the right foods.) or that magnesium deficiency makes the vitamin D levels in your body (which isn't included on normal blood tests in the first place) less effective, or not effective at all.
There are also a percentage of doctors who just downplay the benefits of vitamin d altogether, which boggles the mind, as it's part of how we evolve as a species. So we created it from sunlight when were running around all day naked in the sun, but somehow in the 21st century it's an after thought.
So if they can test for LCLs etc and it's a common yearly thing, they should be able to do it with other things as well. And it's not just about keeping you from being deficient, which is the bare minimum, but about getting you to the optimum. So a doctor saying you're dosing to high (or low) on vitamin D or other things, without a test, might as well treat your problems with some old fashioned blood letting. Making decisions without testing testable things is not science.

@MrCaLFreddyGمنذ 2 سنوات I've spent years researching vitamin d hence I came across your video. Your spot on for the most part however 600-1000iu is kind of a useless dose id="hidden67" class="buttons"> in most cases. It isn't very effective especially to people that could benefit the most from it such as people who are really deficient, overweight or have health problems. For example someone who is overweight can require 3x as much as normal. I know you can't say it out of fear but I can and 5-10x that is far more effective but as you've mentioned dose would also be useless and unhelpful without the magnesium which is what you emphasize and is very important.
Vit d also helps you absorb more calcium which can be good but can also calcify the arteries so vitk2 would also be recommended to help transport that extra calcium to the bones and teeth.
Doctors prescribe up to 50kiu a week which is safe you could even double that for a certain amount of time but they never tell you about the magnesium depletion or extra calcium absorption which Is wrong.
Magnesium is really important and k2 for higher doses
