Energetics of Beta oxidation: Fatty acid oxidation: Part 7. I'm Dr. Vijaya Marakala, explained in this video, total energy production in terms of ATP per complete oxidation of Palmitic acid. Palmitic acid needs 7 cycles of beta oxidation. After beta-oxidation of palmitic acid, it gives 8 acetyl-CoA and reducing equivalents 7FADH2 and 7NADH. Each molecule of acetyl-CoA gives 10 ATP after complete oxidative phosphorylation and substrate-level phosphorylation. Each FADH2 will generate 1.5 ATP and each NADH will generate 2.5 ATP after oxidation in the electron transport chain and oxidative phosphorylation. So a total of 106 ATP produced per complete oxidation of each palmitic acid considering 2 ATP expenditure for the activation of palmitic acid into palmitoyl-CoA in the cytoplasm.
