Thyroid and parathyroid hormone biosynthesis. In this video, I have discussed an essential mineral Iodine, biosynthesis and regulation of both thyroid and parathyroid hormones. T3 and T4 are the thyroid hormones required for growth and developments and various metabolic processes taking place in our body and they require iodine as one of the mineral and tyrosine as an important amino acid for the iodination. Our dietary iodine trapped by thyroid follicular cells from the capillaries adjacent to the thyroid gland. Then activation of iodine takes place and this process is called oxidation of iodine catalyzed by thyroperoxidase. The next step is iodination which is nothing but the attachment of activated iodine to the tyrosine residues present in thyroglobulin. Thyroglobulin is a glycoprotein synthesized by thyroid follicular cells and released and stored as a colloid in the central space of acini rich in tyrosine residues. After iodination, there is a process called coupling to form T3 and T4 and stored as colloid along with thyroglobulin.
