A shocking new survey from researchers at the University Of Chicago revealed that 47 million Americans believe that the 2020 election was stolen from Donald Trump. Even worse is that 21 million of those individuals believe that Trump should be restored "by force or violence", if necessary. While the researchers point out that very few people who hold extremist views actually act on them, this information is nevertheless distressing and emblematic of the growing partisan divides in this country. Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins discusses this. A new report from the University of Chicago's project on security and threats has revealed that 47 million Americans out of a country out of a little more than 330 million, 47 million believe that the 2020 presidential election was somehow stolen away from Donald Trump. Now, if that was all this study had found, that would be troubling enough. But the real terrifying part is the fact that 21 million agree that quote, use of force is justified to restore Donald J. Trump to the presidency, 21 million people in the United States right this second think that they have the right to get violent and that it is necessary and good to do so if it results in Donald Trump being restored as the president of the United States, 21 million. Now, if the study had only found that in addition to the 47 million, then that would be super troubling, right? It's not like though these people have actual ties to extremist groups though, is it? Ah, crap. Our survey found that many of these 21 million people with insurrectionist sentiments have the capacity for violent mobilization. At least 7 million of them already own a gun and at least 3 million have served in the US military and so have lethal skills. Of those 21 million, 6 million said they supported right-wing militias and extremist groups. And 1 million said that they are themselves or personally know a member of such a group, including the oath keepers and proud boys. The study then says like, hey, but listen, you know, most people who hold extremist beliefs do not act on them. So, you know, we got that going for us, I guess. Most people who believe these things typically don't act on them, except of course, you know, the millions who say, oh yeah, we're already a part of this. Can this country be saved? Can what has happened in the United States be undone? Can this level of partisanship truly be erased? Now let's be honest, the United States has gone through worse than this in the past. Okay. Let us, let us make that crystal clear. This is not the worst the country has ever been. But we're supposed to be more modern now. We're supposed to be more evolved. We're supposed to be beyond those days of the us versus them. The North versus South, the black versus white. And we're not. And to me, that's probably the worst part of all of this. This country never truly moved on. Oh, things changed. Fights changed. Political parties, you know, shifted their beliefs. The Democrats became Republicans. Republicans became Democrats and parties realigned and people realigned. But we're, we're still as horrible as we've ever been. And that's what's so shocking and terrifying and to be honest, quite sad about this new survey. We are not moving forward as a people. And as long as this level of partisanship continues to exist, we cannot move forward. We're seeing that play itself out in DC right now, as I talked about in an earlier segment. We know what this hyper-partisanship brings to this country. It's destroying us. It's killing us figuratively and literally in some instances. And if we can't move past this, then we can't move forward at all. And we have to come up with ways. We have to find a solution here before it's too late.
